Home/What is a family story

What is a family story? The part that gets handed down.

A family story is the written, living account of a family’s life — the photos, video, voices, and words behind them, organized into chapters that keep growing. It is not an album. It is not a slideshow. It is not a book project that ends when the book ships.

A family story is written chapters with names, told in sentences from your own photos, words, and voice. It is the part a photo can’t hold: why the moment mattered.

why it matters

Photos outlive the memory of why.

Every family has a box — or a camera roll — full of pictures nobody can explain anymore. The faces are clear. The reasons are gone. A photo outlives the memory of why it mattered, and the story is the only part that can be handed down on purpose.

Researchers have noticed the same thing from the other direction. Psychologists Marshall Duke and Robyn Fivush at Emory University developed a “Do You Know?” scale — questions like Do you know where your grandparents grew up? Do you know how your parents met? — and found that children who knew more of their family’s story tended to show higher self-esteem and a stronger sense of control over their lives. Honestly stated: that research is correlational. The likely mechanism is that families who tell stories are families that talk — the talking may be the active ingredient. Either way, the stories are the vehicle, and they only exist if somebody keeps them.

What a family story is made of

  • Chapters, not folders — named pieces of the story (“The Summer of Dinosaurs”), written in sentences, the way you’d tell it.
  • Answers over time — questions asked this year and again in five years, so you can watch people change.
  • Patterns noticed — the things that keep repeating across years, which no one inside the family is positioned to see.
  • Moments watched together — a story you can sit down and experience, not just scroll.

how roon builds one

You live it. Rooney writes it down.

Roon’s storyteller, Rooney, works from the media your family already has — no blank page, no year of homework. Rooney organizes moments into named chapters, asks gentle, specific questions by text, reminds you of anniversaries and letters coming due, notices patterns across the years and shows them back, and every January combines your chapters into a Year Film to watch together. Every word comes from your family’s own words and dates. Rooney never invents a memory, and never pretends to be a person.

A family story in practice looks like a childhood kept as it happens, grandparents’ answers kept as chapters, and letters waiting for the right day.

What is the difference between a family story and a photo album?

An album stores pictures in order. A family story is written: chapters with names, told in sentences from your family’s own words, explaining what was happening and why it mattered. Albums hold evidence. Stories hold meaning.

Do family stories really matter for kids?

Research from Emory University (the “Do You Know?” scale) associates children knowing their family’s stories with higher self-esteem and resilience. It’s an association, not proof of cause — families who tell stories tend to be families that talk. The stories are how the talking survives.

How is a Roon story different from a memory book?

A memory book is a finished object about a finished period, usually one person’s. A Roon story is living: the whole family adds to it, it starts from the photos you already have instead of a blank page, and it keeps going — chapters this year, a film every January, letters for decades from now.

Who writes the story?

Rooney, the storyteller inside Roon, writes chapters using only your family’s photos, words, voice, and dates. If Rooney doesn’t know something, it asks — it never fills gaps with guesses.
