Home/StoryWorth alternative
Looking for a StoryWorth alternative? It depends on the job.
StoryWorth is a good product for its job: one storyteller answers weekly prompts for a year, and at the end there’s a printed book. If that’s the job you want done, do it with them — they’ve printed over a million books. This page is for the people who looked at that shape and wanted a different one.
| StoryWorth / Remento | Roon | |
|---|---|---|
| Whose story | One storyteller (extra storytellers cost more) | The whole family — Rooney follows 3 people closely, everyone appears |
| How it’s made | Weekly prompts answered by writing or recording, for a year | Rooney writes chapters from the photos, video, and voice you already have; questions fill the gaps |
| Where it starts | A blank page and a year of homework | Your camera roll — including the years before you joined |
| How it ends | A printed book, then it’s finished | It doesn’t end — chapters keep coming, plus a film every January |
| Price | $59–$199 per storyteller, per year | $99 a year per family (or $12/month); Forever $749 once |
| Printed book | Yes — that’s the product | No. If a printed book is what you want, they do it well |
The differences that actually matter
Homework vs. already-have. The most common reason StoryWorth projects stall is participation: a year of weekly writing is a real commitment, and many storytellers quietly stop. Roon starts from the photos and video your family already has — the story appears first, and Rooney’s gentle questions only fill gaps. Nobody has to write an essay, ever.
One person vs. the whole family. Book products charge per storyteller. Roon is one price per family: partners, kids, grandparents — up to 6 contributors adding to one story, their words woven into the same chapters.
Finished vs. living. A book ends. Roon keeps going: new chapters as life happens, patterns noticed across years, sealed letters for future dates, and a Year Film every January.
the honest trade
What you give up: the book.
Roon has no printed book, and we won’t dress that up. If holding a finished hardcover is the point for you, StoryWorth (or Remento, if you’d rather speak than type) is the right tool. If the point is a story that covers your whole family, starts from your real library, and is still being written in ten years — that’s the job Roon was built for. Here’s what a family story is, and how parents’ stories get recorded without the homework.
plain answers
Questions, answered straight.
Is Roon better than StoryWorth?
They do different jobs. StoryWorth makes a printed book from one storyteller’s year of answers. Roon makes a living, written story of your whole family from the media you already have, and keeps telling it. Which is better depends entirely on which of those you want.
Why do people look for a StoryWorth alternative?
Mostly three reasons, from comparison reviews: the storyteller has to write (or record) every week for a year and many stop partway; it covers one storyteller per purchase; and when the book arrives, the project is over. Roon was designed against all three.
Can my parent just talk instead of writing?
Yes. Contributors in Roon answer by text message or voice — short replies, a few minutes at a time — and Rooney writes their words into chapters. There is no weekly assignment and no deadline.
Does Roon make a printed book at the end?
No. What Roon keeps is the living story itself, the January Year Film, and your full export — everything, originals included, downloadable at any time. If a printed book matters most, use a book product.
How is Remento different from StoryWorth?
Remento is the same shape with a microphone: your storyteller speaks the answers instead of typing them, and the printed book carries QR codes that play their voice. Weekly prompts for a year, one storyteller, a book at the end. Our page on StoryWorth vs Remento lays the two side by side — and shows the third option that isn’t a book.
What if my parent won’t write every week?
Then a prompt book stalls — it is the most common reason those projects go unfinished. In Roon there is nothing to keep up with. The story starts from your family’s photos, Rooney’s questions arrive by text with no deadline, and an unanswered question never expires.
We're building this with a small group of families first.
Roon isn't open to everyone yet. We're letting in a limited first group — people who'll help shape it, get in at founding pricing, and keep that price for as long as they stay. Add your email and we'll be in touch as spots open.
You're on the list.
We'll email you the moment a spot opens. Thank you for wanting this to exist.
